URGENT MESSAGE FOR ALL PUPILS, PARENTS, CARERS AND STAFF
SCHOOL CLOSED TO PUPILS - MONDAY 4TH JANUARY 2021
To all pupils, parents, carers and staff
You may have seen or heard a lot in the media over the past 48 hours about the reopening of schools tomorrow, Monday 4th January, and the health and safety concerns raised by teaching and non teaching unions.
Whilst the government position on the reopening of schools in our area remains unchanged, the developments over the past 24 hours have led to a feeling of uncertainty, worry and anxiety for many of our pupils, their families and our staff.
This is an extremely difficult position for all schools, but the safety and well-being of every single member of our school community has to be our top priority. We need time to process the news and events that have unfolded over the past couple of days, time to respond to the many questions that members of our school community are asking and most importantly, time to review and make sure that the safety measures we have in place are robust enough to keep our school, our staff and your children as safe as possible. We also need time to consider how we can practically implement the mass testing programme that we have been asked to set up in school.
The Senior Leadership and Management Team have been working tirelessly over the past 24 hours to try to find a way forward, but in the last hour, with support and guidance from our Trust, we have concluded, regretfully, that it is not safe for us to open tomorrow as planned.
Thomas Bewick School will therefore be closed to all pupils on Monday 4th January for an emergency training and development day.
This is an absolute last resort as we know the frustration and disruption that this decision will cause. We are deeply sorry and apologise for any inconvenience, but we are asking for your support and understanding as we try to navigate the school through a very difficult time.
We aim to have a plan for Tuesday 5th January in place as quickly as possible and will obviously communicate with you about this tomorrow.
Once again, we are very sorry to have to do this at such short notice but hope that you can understand our reasons for doing so.
